Assumar Country House
Our house, with four spacious rooms and a garden studio, is located on the outskirts of Assumar, an authentic Alentejan village surrounded by extensive plains where cows and sheep graze. You can feel the slow pulse of everyday life. The São Mamede National Nature Park is nearby. You take a walk along quiet field roads, or explore the area by bicycle. Use our spacious swimming pool. In our garden a seat, a book and a nice glass of wine are waiting for you.
Assumar Country House is a special place with a rich history. Our house was built over 400 years ago. The property first appeared in 1664 in the local archives when property tax was introduced, that was still paid in “Reis” (the currency at the time). Under the name “Estalagem velha”, it was a transit house for travelers between Lisbon and Madrid from 1767 onwards. One of the previous owners was the famous Manuel Velez de Peso (1829-1906), a man who owned extensive areas of land in the county. His memorial stone was placed in our Capela. The names of the rooms refer to former residents, including a priest and an army captain. By opening the house to guests we reconnect it with its original destination.
activities
The Alentejo is the largest province in Portugal; comparable in area to the Netherlands, but there are fewer than 800,000 inhabitants. In addition to farming cattle, this region is increasingly active in wine production; one of the best kept tasty secrets of the Alentejo. Time came to a halt here in many places. You walk through extensive landscapes on undiscovered paths between ancient olive and cork trees, enjoy the simple and honest local cuisine in one of the many picturesque white villages where old traditions are still cherished. You will discover marble quarries, fields of gold, menhirs and Roman ruins. The starry sky is enchanting. Everything is available here to spend a relaxing holiday.
